Consumers Union (CU), the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, seeks a law school graduate or policy analyst to work for one year as the Esther Peterson Fellow in its Washington Office. The position begins in the fall of each year. The Fellow will work on consumer advocacy projects including: health care reform, product safety, access to affordable financial services, food safety, and other consumer issues.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Esther Peterson Fellow will receive hands-on experience and training in advocacy on consumer issues at the federal legislative and administrative level. Responsibilities include legal research and writing, bill analysis, lobbying Congress and administrative agencies, and filing petitions at administrative agencies. On occasion, the Fellow will work with other public interest groups. Work at the Washington Office may be coordinated with Consumers Union's work on comparable issues in our regional offices in Texas and California and with our testing and research center in New York.
The fellowship is named after one of history's leading consumer, women and labor advocates, Esther Peterson. She advised three Presidents (Kennedy, Johnson, and Carter) on consumer policy issues, and she represented the international consumer movement in a leading advocacy role at the United Nations.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS/SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Consumers Union plans to maintain an ongoing fellowship program and contact among the fellows. Applicants should have completed their legal or public policy studies within the last few years. The salary will be approximately $34,000 per year, in addition to Consumers Union's full benefits.

law students 1L through 3L in the Washington Office. Although the clerkship
is unpaid, Consumers Union will contribute funds to participate in the federal
work-study program. In addition, we will contribute funds to participate in
public interest fellowship(s).

The Washington Office advocates on behalf of consumers before Congress and regulatory
agencies on a wide range of issues, including product safety, health care, telecommunications,
and financial services. Clerkships are available immediately and require a minimum

· Researching and drafting memoranda on legislative priorities;
· Aiding in research/writing/production of reports and studies;
· Attending congressional hearings and legislative bill drafting sessions regarding banking, health care, telecommunications, electricity deregulation, securities, trade, and antitrust issues and preparing analytical summaries;
· Tracking legislative and regulatory actions on legislative priorities;
· Participating in coalitions to develop legislative strategy to influence the public policy process;
Desirable Qualifications

· Good organizational, research, and analytical capabilities;
· Previous legislative, advocacy, management or human services experience;

Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, is seeking someone with experience in federal legislative and administrative policy to serve as a Consumer Advocate for its Washington Office. The advocate will conduct research on issues affecting consumers and have primary lobbying responsibility on a number of issues, including but not limited to telecommunications policy matters.
Duties and responsibilities:
Tasks would range from communicating with members of Congress, Congressional staffers and the media on specific legislative issues to researching, writing testimony, administrative policy and major reports.

Consumers Union is looking for someone with a commitment to work in the public interest community. Applicants should possess strong strategic, analytical, writing and communication skills, as well as the ability to organize a variety of ongoing projects.
