Hunting for Hackers and Thieves Posted

David Lazarus wrote a column that appeared in last Friday's San Francisco Chronicle about Gymboree (a children's clothing company) and their independent investigation to try to find out how laptops with employees' sensitive personal information went missing. It's good that additional steps have been taken by the company, but what we'd like to point out is that Gymboree has also stated they are now encrypting information on their laptops--which is exactly why these data security breach notice laws have been so important in raising the bar to protect you. Without these good notice of breach laws, would we know about the missing information? If they didn't have to tell us information has gone missing, would companies and the goverment be more apt to conduct a private investigation and implement additional precautions?
