President Obama’s call last Sunday for a top-to-bottom review of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is good news for consumers, and so is the increasing attention Congress is paying to food safety. A Senate Agriculture Committee hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 5. The recall of two years’ worth of production from a peanut butter factory in Georgia underlines critical weaknesses in the FDA’s inspection and enforcement capacity. FDA can remedy some of the problems, but to get the major improvement we need Congress must act as well.

List of peanut butter-related recalls continues to grow Posted

Stating that its investigation into salmonella-tainted peanut butter and peanut paste is "very active and dynamic," the Food and Drug Administration over the weekend reported more recalls of foods that include peanut butter as an ingredient. The company associated with the source of the outbreak, Peanut Corporation of America, also broadened its recall both nationally and internationally.

Late August, the FDA issued a final rule amending previous food additive regulations to allow up to the maximum dose of irradiation (4.0 kiloGray) for fresh spinach and fresh iceberg lettuce. Popeye would surely be scratching his bald head.
