Moo-tiplicity Posted by Reggie at 10/24/06 03:44 PM

moo-tiplicityThey say “you can’t step in the same river twice,” but you may soon be eating the same steak over and over whether you want to or not. That’s because the FDA voluntary moratorium on food products from cloned animals and their offspring could be lifted once FDA finalizes its risk assessment for cloned animals.

The FDA hired the National Academy of Sciences to look into the safety of cloned food products in 2002, the agency is now reviewing a draft assessment based on the NAS report. A final report is expected this December. If the agency adopts the assessment, it will be déjà vu all over again. Expect a repeat of the FDA’s handling of biotech food and bovine growth hormone, both approved with lingering safety questions and with no requirement for labeling.

Its possible that strong public opposition to cloning at the beginning of the process and an even stronger probable public reaction to being offered cloned food without their knowledge and consent could mean a different regulatory outcome.

The Center for Food Safety and several other groups including Consumers Union are pressing FDA hard for complete safety assessments and mandatory labeling should FDA grant approval.

Our Congress has just been appalling these last
few years. The answer is to keep voting the bad
ones out of office. Watch their votes, and if
they don't vote for the common good, let's vote them out of office. People just need to pay
attention. That is one of our best weapons.

For red meat at home, I only eat Bison meat. They only eat organic grass.

I use the EDF fish guide for fish, and I only
buy free range, all natural eggs.

"The way we use our dollars" is our biggest
weapon.

The big corporations don't care about much, but
they care about earning money.

In January, we can start asking Congress to
reverse all of the damage that this administration
has caused. A lot of remediation will be needed.
Unfortunately, old growth forests can't be
replaced. Mountain tops can't be replaced, but
we can start to clean up the damage.

all we have to do is have a voice, and use it we make the usa run why shouldn't we be making the choices.this is the land of the free right?
