Organic Poli-Cyclone Posted

Looks like there's a bigger storm brewing on the cloned food front. Organic labeling policy does not currently prohibit milk and meat derived from clones from carrying the organic label. In the last posting of Fed Up, I speculated that FDA might approve cloned food without requiring it to be labeled. If cloned food can also be labeled organic, consumers would have no way, short of producing their own food of being certain they were not consuming meat and mik from cloned animals. Check out the October 23rd issue of FDA Week for a very interesting discussion of this issue.

I HAVE SOLVED THE WHOLE PROBLEM ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, AND AM TRYING TO INFLUENCE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. I'M A VEGETARIAN AND I TRY TO USE PRODUCTS THAT ARE ORGANIC. THIS RESOLVES A MORAL, HEALTH AND SOCIAL ISSUE FOR ME. I ALSO USE PRODUCTS THAT ARE CRUELTY FREE (NO ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION). FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT READY TO BECOME VEGETARIANS, I ENCOURAGE THEM TO BUY THEIR ANIMAL PRODUCTS FROM FAMILY-RUN, FREE-RANGE FARMS AND RANCHES - WHERE ANIMALS ARE NOT FED HORMONES AND ANTIBIOTICS AND ARE NOT MISTREATED. I SHOP AT STORES THAT ARE MORE SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE AND HUMANE CERTIFIED, SUCH AS "WHOLE FOODS". PLEASE SIGN THE "STOP THE HORRORS OF FACTORY FARMING PETITION" POSTED ON-LINE.

We need to abolish the FDA - it serves big business not the people and
The only way to combat the FDA and big business is to have families go back to farming for themselves. The more this happens the more business, big business looses. They will take notice. Another idea would be to limit the size and number of farms a business could own - but I'm sure that could be gotten around by sneaky people in government and business - just as the organic label is being harmed now.

If everyone did that then demand would outweigh supply and the prices of foods from family-run farms would sky-rocket.
I think fighting for a label is a great way to do it. Like other labels such as "cruelty-free" or "fair-trade," the businesses that don't carry them tend to look bad to their customers. So it's a great incentive.
Furthermore, most people, especially in urban areas, don't have the time or access to seek out foods from family-run farms, farmer's markets, or a whole foods grocery store (and there are a lot of places like this). These lifestyles should be accessable for all. Besides, what better advertisement for people who aren't aware than stickers that guarantee their food is clone free. Like "organic" labels, people will wonder what it is and look it up.

Vegetarian diets encourage stomach cancer. A lot of people choose not to be vegetarian for that reason.

Please, ask your legislators to repeal HR 4167,(passed by the 109th Congress on Mar. 8, 2006) which hamstrings states' ability to keep food safe. On Consumers Union Action Network you can
find your legislators' voting records
Other places where you can keep up with your
legislators' votes are: citizen.org, aclu.org,
aauw.org, populationconnection.org,lcv.org,
and npca.org.
When the new Congress convenes, I plan to email
legislators, asking for changes. I'm going to get
the paperback directory from the Congressional
Record on line.
We need to ask for repeal of NAFTA, GAAT and the
other "free trade" agreements. They are for the
benefit of big corporations, only.
Let us have fair trade. Buy fair trade products
when you have a choice. Ex. chocolate and coffee.
We need to put a stop to biologically engineered
seed, which is for the benefit of big
corporations, only, also. I buy organic rice. It
is delicious!
We need to put a stop to US emperialism. That
would cure a lot that ails us and our reputation
around the world. This needs to be a big
priority!!!

I AM RESPONDING TO THE BLOG POSTED ON 10/26/06 WITH NO NAME STATING THAT A VEGETARIAN DIET ENCOURAGES STOMACH CANCER.
I WAS SURPRISED TO READ THIS AS I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IT BEFORE NOW. IF ANYTHING EATING MEAT IS KNOWN TO ENCOURAGE CANCER OF MANY FORMS AND VEGETARIANISM PROTECTS ONE FROM MANY FORMS OF CANCER, INCLUDING STOMACH AND INTESTINAL TRACT CANCERS.
I DID SOME RESEARCH AND I BELIEVE THAT THIS WAS A MISTATEMENT ON THAT PARTY'S PART. I ENCOURAGE WHOEVER WROTE THAT BLOG TO COME UP WITH SOME FACTUAL INFORMATION ON HOW A VEGETARIAN DIET ENCOURAGES STOMACH CANCER.
I RECOMMEND THE SITE- http://www.vegsource.com/harris/cancer_vegdiet.
THIS IS BY A MEDICAL DOCTOR AND PROVIDES SOME FACTUAL INFORMATION BASED ON STUDIES AND SCIENCE.
