“Our food safety structure is collapsing and endangering public health.” A strong statement from Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D. Conn) who announced her subcommittee would hold a hearing Thursday, Feb. 8th on food safety.
According to DeLauro and many others, including Consumers Union, serious discussion of our food safety system is long overdue. Congresswoman DeLauro, who chairs the House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee, cited high profile incidents of E.coli contamination in vegetables as well as the General Accounting Office’s (GAO) designation of food safety as a high risk area warranting immediate attention from Congress and the Executive Branch.
