List of peanut butter-related recalls continues to grow Posted by Tim at 01/21/09 12:04 PM

Stating that its investigation into salmonella-tainted peanut butter and peanut paste is "very active and dynamic," the Food and Drug Administration over the weekend reported more recalls of foods that include peanut butter as an ingredient. The company associated with the source of the outbreak, Peanut Corporation of America, also broadened its recall both nationally and internationally.

Now I am sure that Consumer's Union is gone off the rails.

The CDC noticed an unusual number of salmonella cases across the entire nation and informed the FDA. The FDA and CDC collaborated to find out within 5 days that it was a particular brand of peanut butter made at a specific plant that caused the problem.

How much better can it get than that?

If you read Consumer's union, not enough. Consumer's union is asking you to send a letter to your government leadership to do more. DO MORE WHAT? What do they propose? Sampling every package of peanut butter and downstream product as soon as you open it and send the sample to the CDC? Maybe an inspector should be shipped inside every package?

There was a time when I trusted Consumers Union but now I see them as just another fringe organization that gets its jollies by attacking everything and everyone.

Lets go back to the years when Consumers Union proposed ways to make things better instead of just pointing fingers to create their next "WOW" story.

I'm very glad for any and all monitoring of peanut butter. It poses other threats besides salmonella. I do eat peanut butter, but only brands I trust. Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia. I have known this for years, well before the internet, but many people don't know it.

Aflatoxin is a potent human carcinogen. It is a naturally occurring toxic metabolite produced by certain fungi (Aspergillus flavis), a mold found on food products such as corn and peanuts, peanut butter. It acts as a potent liver carcinogen in rodents (and, presumably, humans). They are probably the best known and most intensively researched mycotoxins in the world. Aflatoxins have been associated with various diseases , such as aflatoxicosis , in livestock , domestic animals and humans throughout the world .

The post by "pre-alzheimer " above has it right.

What does Consumers expect. They have not done their home work, yet point the finger for just another wow statement. Lets get some good facts, and that is what Consumers should be doing! Not just finger pointing. Problems, if they exist, do not get solved that way.

Consumers needs to get back to the basics and do their home work...
