Peanut Processor Knowingly Sold Tainted Products Posted by Tim at 01/28/09 11:35 AM

The Georgia peanut plant knowingly released tainted peanut butter that led to over 500 cases of illness and now eight deaths. This Washington Post article has a great quote from our NIMF crusader, "Jean Halloran, director of food safety for Consumers Union, said if the government was adequately protecting the food supply, the outbreak could have been minimized or even prevented, and lives could have been saved. Major reforms in inspections and regulations are past due, she said."
USA Today had this to say, "It's incredibly negligent," says William Hubbard, a former FDA associate commissioner. Hubbard questions why the FDA didn't act sooner, given the sanitation violations found by state inspectors."
Also this breakdown of how children are being affected "Half of those stricken are younger than 16, and 21% are under 5, Tauxe says. While PCA's peanut butter was sold in bulk to institutions, its peanut paste has been used as an ingredient in snack foods."

Again we are urging you to call your schools, PTA's, retirement and nursing homes and make sure they have pulled the products off their shelves. Then tell us about it. The information you share and the actions you take are crucial to the work we do.

Finally, in the immortal words of Twisted Sister- Tell Congress that "WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE" Consumers demand a major overhaul of the FDA! Click here to send them the message.
