Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009- 1st Hurdle Cleared Posted by Tim at 06/22/09 06:43 PM

The Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009 has cleared its first major hurdle by passing unanimously out of the Energy and Commerce Committee. Active citizens played a major role in this.
Proving it were multiple members of the committee citing constituent stories as a reason for this bill to pass. Thousands made phone calls and sent emails calling for Food Safety Reform. Many have gone above and beyond the call of duty hounding staffers and even the representatives themselves until your voices were heard. Thank you all for your hard work whether you perceive it as little or large it made a huge impact on the political process.

While all your efforts made a difference there are a couple we the Food Safety Team would like to highlight. First, were those of Peter Hurley and his son Jacob. Peter and Jacob have traveled all over Oregon to educate the public and decision makers about the life and death importance this bill has. Representative Walden (OR-R) referred to Peter and Jacob in his opening remarks and called on the House to rename the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, Jacob's Bill.

Another testament to civic activism are Juliana and her son, also named Jacob. The Goswicks tracked down Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-D) at a community event and pressed her again for a hard commitment to support the bill. They received the note below a couple of days later.

Thank you all for your dedication, idealism and toughness. This victory is just the first step. Please send this action to 10 of your friends and ask them to join us in the fight.
