HR 2749 is coming up for a vote with in the next hour. Please take a moment and call your Congressman and tell them to Vote Yes for a Safe Food System.
Then take an additional moment and call these key Republican legislators and encourage them to vote yes as well.
Rep Boehner- Ohio (202) 225-6205
Rep. Cantor- Virgina 202.225-2815
Rep Lucas- Oklahoma (202) 225-5565
Do you have romaine lettuce, sprouts or fresh cilantro in your fridge? The FDA just announced a nationwide recall of romaine for salmonella contamination, a recall in the Northeast of sprouts for dangerous Listeria, and a recall of fresh cilantro in Texas. You probably didn't know that.
A bill to help prevent food poisoning and to reduce our reliance on the unreliable recall process goes to the House floor for a vote this afternoon or tomorrow!
Our nation puts a lot of energy and money into recalls that most people never hear about, and not enough into preventing contamination in the first place. That could finally change with the passage of the Food Safety Enhancement Act (HR 2749).
The Act requires more frequent inspections of food processing plants, new standards for growing lettuce, company plans to prevent contamination, registration fees to help cover the cost of reform, and tough fines on those who dodge rules and put Americans at risk.
But some powerful forces in the industry don’t like this bill -- they just want us to ‘trust them’ to do the right thing. No thanks!

The way we police the food industry needs severe revamping. All of our food is controlled by a few mega-corporations who care little or nothing about our health or about worker conditions. Monsanto is a trust that should be scrutinized and busted as the totalitarian mafia it is. Monsanto controls most of the crop seeds (mainly genetically modified) in our country as well as abroad, and that is wrong.
