Last week, amidst amendments that ranged in topic from regulating ginseng to the sale of baby turtles to improved labeling of tanning beds (yes, these are the pressing issues our legislators are tackling!) there were several substantive amendments made that - if the bill ultimately passes - will mean good things for consumers. One such amendment on food safety, for example, would increase oversight of imported (human) food, and require uniform labeling for pet food

And, of course, the hotly-contested drug reimportation amendment: The Senate voted to allow citizens to purchase drugs from other countries – but it was closely followed by a measure that would not allow imports unless the government can assure that they “pose no additional risk to the public’s health and safety.” A virtually impossible task, this essentially negated the reimportation amendment.
