Frequently Asked Questions On Number Portability

Q. What is number portability?

A. Wireless local number portability allows cell phone users to keep their current phone number if they decide to switch to a new wireless phone company, as long as they continue to live or work in the same geographical area. Right now, if you switch providers you have to get a new phone number. But starting on November 24, new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations will, after four years of industry delay, finally give consumers the right to take their number with them when they switch carriers. Several wireless carriers are attempting to block the implementation date.

Q. Will all wireless phone users get number portability on November 24?

A. No. At first number portability will only be available if you live or work in one of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Eventually, though, everyone will be able to take advantage of number portability.

Q. Can I switch my landline number to a wireless phone?

A. Yes, but only under very limited circumstances. However, the FCC is considering a rule that would make wireline to wireless portability easier for everyone.
