Cell Phone Companies Respond To Consumers
Consumers Union's campaign, www.EscapeCellHell.org, has given voice to thousands of consumers who are frustrated with poor cell phone service and draconian contract terms. Consumers have used EscapeCellHell.org to contact their cell phone company to ask for a few common sense improvements to their business practices, including:
- Better information about where cell phones will work before people sign up for a plan.
- Pro-rated early contract termination charges (consumers shouldn't have to pay the full fee - which can range from $175-$200) near the end of a contract.
- A policy against "locking down" cell phone handsets that could be used on other carriers’ networks.
The response letters from the cell phone carriers are posted below:
Cingular
Verizon
US Cellular
TracFone
AT&T Wireless
Sprint
Nextel
Virgin Mobile
