Consumers seek insurance redlining
relief
from 3rd Court of Appeals
At issue is release of data proving
discrimination; first test of new public information law
WHAT: Hearing on an appeal by the
Center for Economic Justice (CEJ) and consumer advocate Birny
Birnbaum seeking to reverse a Temporary Injunction granted by Travis
County District Judge Jeanne Meurer which prohibits the Texas
Department of Insurance from publicly releasing zip code data that
can serve as evidence of discrimination in the sale of automobile
insurance (known as redlining.)
In hearing this case, the three justices will
also be called to interpret a new statute (Public Information Act of
1999, Sect. 552.022 (b) intended to make government records easier
for the public to obtain.
