America’s health system is frequently touted as
having the highest quality in the world. In reality,
Americans have very little information about the quality
of care delivered by our hospitals, doctors and nursing
homes. Further, significant problems such as hospital-acquired
infections and medical errors add billions of dollars
to our health care costs every year. Prescription drugs
are often rushed to market with negative consequences,
and unfavorable results of clinical trials are kept secret.
