SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The state Senate Agriculture and Water Resources Committee will debate and vote on a bill that would repeal the current ban on retailers selling milk for below their cost. Consumers Union is the sponsor of the bill, SB 419 by Sen. Jackie Speier (D-Daly City). Other supporters include CalPIRG, Older Women's League, California Food Policy Advocates, California WIC Association, California Hunger Action Coalition, Center for Public Interest Law and Children's Advocacy Institute, among others. Consumers Union Policy Analyst Elisa Odabashian, who has authored numerous reports on retail milk prices in California, will testify at the hearing.
WHAT: State legislative hearing on SB 419, repealing the current ban on selling milk as a low-cost special.
WHEN: Tuesday, April 20, 1999, 11 A.M.
WHERE:
Senate Room 112
State Capitol
Sacramento, CA
NOTE: The committee will also hear SB 1284, (Bowen), which deals with a different milk-related issue. That bill would lower California's current nutritional standards for milk, a move supported by out-of-state dairies. Consumers Union has no position on that measure.
