CONSUMERS UNION "DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED" IN
Y2K LIABILITY AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE WHITE HOUSE & CONGRESS

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sally Greenberg, senior counsel for product safety at Consumers Union, made the following statement today in response to the agreement between the White House and Congress on the Y2K liability bill:

"Consumers Union is deeply disappointed that the White House failed to stand up to fully protect consumers, who, through no fault of their own, could be injured by Y2K failures.

"This deal is marginally better than some of the more extreme proposals that were first introduced, but we're talking about the difference between a bad deal and a terrible bill. At the end of this process, consumers are still getting a raw deal.

"There is precious little in this compromise to help consumers harmed as the result of Y2K problems. It falls far short of the "consumer carve outs" that Consumers Union supported that would have exempted consumers from the onerous provisions of the legislation."
