Consumers Union Experts Available to Discuss Dangers Posed by Power Window Switches in Cars
Last year four children were strangled by power windows in cars that did not have lever-type switches or auto-reverse sensors to stop them from closing when they hit an obstacle such as an arm or neck, according to Kids and Cars, a nonprofit safety organization.
California Legislature Enacts Toughest Financial Privacy Protections In The Nation
The California state legislature has passed the strongest financial privacy protections in the nation. August 19's approval sends the measure to Governor Gray Davis for his signature. Governor Davis has already pledged to sign the landmark consumer protection bill into law.

California Bans Most Service Fees on Gift Certificates
A new law going into effect January 1, 2004 in California bans nearly all service fees on retailer gift cards and gift certificates. Gift cards are proliferating. The Wall Street Journal estimated in Feb. 2003 that $36 to $38 billion in gift cards were sold in 2002.
