Consumers Union supported federal legislation requiring eye doctors to release contact lens prescriptions to their patients so they can buy replacement lenses wherever they choose, and had worked to pass similar laws in Texas and California. Hearing aids are also a source of widespread consumer frustration due to high costs, short trial periods, and refund offers filled with loopholes. Nearly 4 out of 10 Americans will suffer from hearing loss by age 65.
