Coalition Statement in Response to Withdrawal of Baroody Nomination to Chair CPSC

Washington, DC—The coalition of consumer, safety, and environmental groups that had opposed the nomination of Michael Baroody to the Chairmanship of the CPSC welcomes the withdrawal of Mr. Baroody’s nomination.

The controversy surrounding the Baroody nomination focused attention on the important mandate of the CPSC’s role as the nation’s top watchdog for the safety of consumer products, and in particular children’s products. In recent years, the agency has suffered from weak leadership, lack of funds, and diminishing staff. We urge the Administration to nominate a candidate who can help strengthen the agency and its mission to oversee the safety of consumer products.
