FCC Approval of Merger Between Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation and Univision Results in One Company Dominating Hispanic Market Consumers Union Says Merger is Another Blow to Media Diversity and Localism

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today’s FCC-approved merger between the Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation (HBC) and Univision creates a huge Spanish-language media empire that will control many of the most important sources of information for the nation’s largest Hispanic communities.

“This merger means that the Latino community in the U.S. will less diversity in the news and political information they receive—one media conglomerate will totally dominate the Spanish-language media landscape,” said Luis Figueroa, Policy Analyst for Consumers Union. “This is another disappointing example of the FCC’s open-door policy for media consolidation.”
