Progress toward prescription drug reform Posted

There’s a whirlwind of activity on pharmaceutical drug reform. Many states have introduced legislation to provide better disclosure and transparency – whether it be disclosure of clinical trial results through a state-based clinical trial registry, good faith duties for pharmaceutical benefit managers, or requiring drug companies to say what they spend on marketing to doctors.
Here’s some recent news: in Oregon a legislative committee considered an important pharma marketing disclosure bill last week. In California, they took testimony on a package of bills–including a state clinical trial registry and results database. In New York legislators have filed both marketing disclosure and clinical trials bills. And that’s just the states. Things in Congress are barreling ahead. The FACT Act -– requiring a clinical trial registry and a results database -- has already been filed, and we expect to see legislation soon on a clinical trial registry.
