CFA CU ANALYSIS
SHOWS EXTREME
CONCENTRATION OF NEWS MEDIA MARKETS
KEY COMMERCE COMMITTEE MARKETS HIGHLIGHTED
WHAT: Press briefing by the nation's largest consumer advocacy organizations
regarding concentration in local media markets across the country.
WHY: In anticipation of the Senate Commerce Committee hearing, Tuesday
May 13, CFA and CU will walk through analysis that will be submitted to the
committee in their testimony. They will show that media news markets are already
highly concentrated. Allowing TV-newspaper mergers and mergers between local
TV stations will create local media giants that will severely limit competing
news viewpoints.
CFA and CU will release a new analysis
of cities with dominant newspapers, and analysis of local TV stations in these
cities, and the anticompetitive effects of newspaper-broadcast or broadcast-broadcast
mergers.
